With the Covid-19 lockdown lifted in Surabaya, we jumped at the chance to escape and drive to Bali. I organized a health lab to come to our house and draw blood for same day rapid tests. Here in Surabaya, we are at the Red level, the highest level out of 4 in Indonesia. There are so many Covid cases here, that they actually refer to it as the Black zone. Luckily, all of us tested negative. Maybe it was pure luck, or it might have been due to vigilant mask wearing in public, keeping our distance from others, and washing our hands way more than normal. Our school doctor stopped by and gave us each a physical exam and provided us with the needed support letter of a healthy individual. Packed up the car, strapped some surfboards on top, and started the 10 hour drive. If you have never driven in Asia, it is absolute craziness. Lane lines are meaningless, motorbikes pass whenever and wherever they can, and its not unlikely to have a car driving the wrong way on the wrong side of the street. But somehow, it works. Overtaking cars is permissible, even with oncoming motorcycles in the way. They just move to the side. The police at the ferry terminal checked our tests results and health letters and waved us through. After a 30 minute ferry ride, we were in Bali. The streets were empty, the hotels and villas were empty, and every restaurant was empty. It was strange to be the only family in each place we stayed. Some haven’t had guests since April. In typical Balinese fashion, everyone was still smiling and thanked us for coming to visit. Enough words, pictures below.

These are stunning, delightful and leave me longing for your lifestyle. What a great choice going off the path has been for you all. Travel is the best educator.
Just make the choice to go. Travels have opened so many doors for us.
Amazing photos and looks like an amazing time.
Thanks!
Glad to see you all are doing well and enjoying life in spite of the Covid life limits.
We are doing the best we can. Miss my shop and creating things. Someday we’ll return to Oregon.
Are you still in Bali? I have loved following your blog as I lived in Bend for about 6 years and was excited to see a Bend family out sailing and exploring when I found your blog. My parents had a retirement home in LaPine for about 15 years so I have fond feelings and memories of Central OR. Please post updates as they become relevant to your ability to sail, restrictions you are coping with, time you are able to spend off the boat exploring and discovering new places and cultures, etc. Thanks.
Thanks for getting in touch. We are currently on Java Timur and went to Lombok last week. Indonesia is still shut down to foreigners unless you have a work visa, which I do. We miss central Oregon, but love living abroad and sailing around the oceans of the world.
