Cambodia Land-Based trip

January 5, 2020

We were fortunate to be able to visit Cambodia over our winter break from school. Lisa flew back to the states to see her family and support her dad during his open heart surgery. (Everything went well with that.) I spent 8 years teaching in Long Beach, California at a Khmer bilingual school so hearing the people speak, seeing the printed language, and being surrounded by the lovely, smiling faces was a trip down memory lane. Cambodia is a wonderful country that is just now overcoming a brutal past that saw 25% of its population murdered or worked to death by the Khmer Rouge government. It forced us to think about how lucky we are to be born where we were and have the ability and means to travel like we do. The Khmer Rouge sold many of their countries carvings and statues to fund their power grab. Even so, I’m hoping someday I’ll create a book with the several hundred Buddha faces I photographed. We’ll definitely take Lisa back on our next visit.
