Welcome to Lombok

September 28, 2019

The Sail 2 Indonesia and World ARC Rallies both made a stop at Medana Bay Marina where we keep our sailboat. Over 50+ boats arrived for the weeklong festivities. The ARC boats arrived from Darwin, Australia spening a total of 4 days in Indonesia before taking off for Cocos/Keeling Island in the India Ocean on their super fast sail around the world adventure. Their pace is definitely not my cup of tea as they only really see a very tiny snippet of a culture before setting sail again. The village that surrounds Medana Bay Marina opens up their arms and embraces the cruisers by making a community dinner and putting on a great musical show. There is also traditional stick fights and speeches from every important official. Off in the distance you can hear traditional drums beating and they get louder and louder. Soon several hundred women arrive with the feast carefully balanced upon their heads and the band follows them up. The procession lasts for 20 or minutes. After setting down their food the women come grab the visitors and escort them to the grass to sit and partake of their homemade offerings. A truly wonderful time with unique Lombok food dishes made by the families in their humble homes. We all sit around and eat with each other answering questions about each others culture. The Google Translate app was working overtime.
